Staying Motivated

Have you ever felt it was Saturday morning when it’s only Tuesday? Earlier this week I woke up as usual, except this time I thought I didn’t have to get my self to work. Lately, I’ve been feeling unmotivated to get in front of my computer and get some work done. Staying motivated was easy at first, but that changed after a while. I’ve started feeling like taking a break from everything; from computers, reading about the web, and the constant need to work.

Here’s what I think about what happened and what we can do to stay motivated.

Lack of sleep

Needless to say, lack of sleep is something we can all relate to. We’ve all been there. It’s 4am and you’ve got to be up in 3 hours. If you’re lucky, your alarm will actually wake you up; you’ll end up in the shower where the warm water makes it even harder to stay awake. You make it to work and you work for hours and hours. Then you look at the time… 10am? Damn.

What to do:
It’s easier said then done, but the obvious answer is to sleep more. As a freelancer this is probably one of the hardest things you can do. Especially if you’re trying to juggle both a full time job and freelancing. However, getting more sleep is one of the most important things you can do to start feeling better.

Sitting down… days at a time.

As a web developer I’m constantly sitting for most of the day. I then go home and watch some TV, work some more, then play some video games. All these things require very little movement. This also contributes to weight gain which is really easy to do now a days.

What to do:
A sedentary lifestyle means hardly any energy. It takes energy to make energy and you’re not making any sitting down all day. Get up every couple hours. Go outside for 15 minutes. Take a walk and get some fresh air. Anything to get the blood flowing. If you really want to get a boost for the day, get up 30 minutes early and go for a jog or a fast walk. It’ll be hard at first, but it’ll go a long way.

Workaholics anonymous

It’s easy to loose track of time if you love what you do. To often I’ve tried to do just a little bit more. Doing the job/freelance combo I find myself constantly working. Working all day, all night, and even weekends is a sure way to get burnt out. There are definitely times that I can’t avoid working. Especially during deadlines. Focusing only on work however, can be dangerous.

What to do:
I’ve gotten calls at 10pm from a client who needed to have something done before the noon the next day. I used to think that that was okay. I’m a freelancer, I should be available 24/7, right? Wrong. You need time away from work. You need to do things other than work. Time away from indoors. Read a book that’s not work related. Get together with some friends and play some sports. Go on a hike and enjoy mother nature. If you get burnt out, you’ll need some time to yourself. Call in some time off and give yourself a recharge. Your work will be better off for it. If vacations aren’t possible, set aside some time during the week for yourself.

What you do does not define who you are, who you are defines what you do.* It’s okay to step away from your desk. Your work will be there tomorrow.

What do you think?

  3. Dude! Great post.

This is exactly what I’ve been feeling the past couple of weeks! It’s been killing me. I check my email like a fiend trying to get his fix. Between two jobs and freelancing life has become sitting at desk/on the phone endlessly.

I actually decided it was time to cut the 2nd job loose, focus on the first and freelance and ask for more money haha.
